The Hike

  1. Enter the canyon

From the gravel parking area, follow the wash into the canyon. The lower narrows reveal smooth marble walls.

  2. Choose your turnaround

A boulder obstruction about 1.3 miles in is a common turnaround. Continue only if the scrambling and route are within your abilities.

  3. Stop at the final dryfall

The full route ends at an approximately 25-foot dryfall. Turn around here; do not attempt to climb it.

  4. Retrace your route

Return down the canyon on the same route, allowing time to negotiate obstacles carefully.

A Few Common Questions

Do I have to walk the full four miles?

No. This is an out-and-back route, so you can turn around earlier. The lower canyon provides a shorter option.

Is scrambling required?

Yes, continuing through the upper route involves obstacles and scrambling. Turn around before terrain that exceeds your experience.

How long should I allow?

The National Park Service estimates 2½–3 hours for the full four-mile hike. Heat, obstacles and stops can increase that time.
